SA Fashion week

South African Fashion Week has actively encouraged the retail sector to support local designers through trade shows, PopUp Shops, and other programs. However, major retailers and department stores have shown a disappointing and, I believe, shortsighted response. Instead of seizing the chance to develop local brands, many have chosen the easier path of cheap and often uninspiring imports. A significant opportunity exists for the mainstream sector, including the dominant international chains, to commit to local production.

I also firmly believe that the government should adopt a comprehensive approach to revitalize the fashion industry and the extensive skills within our textile sector. This industry has suffered due to a lenient approach to inexpensive imports. It is crucial to introduce incentives and strategies that enable previously strong manufacturers to regain their competitiveness by upgrading technology and fostering collaborative efforts.
